THE SOURCE OF THE PROTEOLYTIC ENZYME IN EXTRACTS OF THE PYLORIC MUCOUS MEMBRANE

Robert K. S. Lim 1

1 The Department of Physiology, University of Edinburgh

(1) A proteolytic ferment, which is much weaker than pepsin in its action, is invariably present in pyloric extracts. It does not act in a neutral or faintly alkaline medium. The material employed for extracts was in every case free from fundus tissue.

(2) Infiltration of pepsin from the fundus accounts for part of the activity observed, especially the increase in activity during digestion, but a secretion of ferment must also be admitted.
