THE MEASUREMENT OF THE DIAMETERS OF ERYTHROCYTES. I. THE MEAN DIAMETER OF THE RED CELLS IN MAN

Eric Ponder 1 and W. G. Millar 1

1 The Department of Physiology, Edinburgh University

1. A method is described in detail for the measurement of erythrocytes in plasma. The cells are photographed under suitable optical conditions, and measured from the negative. The error in measurement does not exceed 0·2µ.

2. The mean size of the diameter of the red cells in man is 8·8µ.

3. Erythrocytes which are dried or stained are of smaller diameter, the difference being about 1·0µ.

4. The frequency distribution of the sizes of the red cells in man closely approximates to the symmetrical type.
