THE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE ON THE CARBOHYDRATE TOLERANCE IN XENOPUS LÆVIS (South African Clawed Toad)

Louis Pierre Bosman 1 and Harry Zwarenstein 1

1 Department of Physiology, University of Cape Town

1. The normal blood-sugar level in Xenopus lævis is about 44 mgs. per cent.

2. On injection of glucose solution, blood-sugar curves are obtained which vary in rapidity of rise and return to normal, according to the temperature at which the experiments are conducted.

3. The renal threshold of Xenopus approximates that of man.

We desire to tender our thanks to the Research Grant Board of the Union of South Africa for financial assistance in this work, and also to Mr D. Duncan for his invaluable aid.
