THE REACTIONS OF ISOLATED MUSCLE STRIPS OF THE STOMACH TO THE OXYTOCIC AND PRESSOR FRACTIONS OF AN EXTRACT OF THE POSTERIOR PITUITARY LOBE
1 Institute of Animal Genetics, University of Edinburgh
The reactions of isolated muscle strips from various regions of the rabbit's and cat's stomach to the oxytocic and pressor fractions of the posterior pituitary lobe (pitocin and pitressin) have been investigated.
Three types of reactions were obtained in muscles from different regions:
(1) Relaxation with pitressin and, to a lesser extent, with pitocin (lateral fundus of the rabbit's stomach).
(2) Contraction with pitocin and, to a lesser extent, with pitressin (anterior fundus of the rabbit's stomach).
(3) Contraction with pitressin; no effect with pitocin (antrum of the rabbit's and cat's stomach).
The reactions of these strips to a number of other drugs were also investigated. Histamine is apparently not responsible for the inhibitory reactions obtained.
