A TYPE OF MATERNAL BEHAVIOUR IN THE NORMAL OEligSTROUS FEMALE RABBIT

C. W. Bellerby 1

1 The Department of Social Biology in the University of London

(1) Nest construction in the rabbit such as occurs at the end of pseudo-pregnancy has been observed in the normal oeligstrous female when kept in isolation.

(2) It is not accompanied by any of the changes in the ovaries, mammary glands, and uterus which are usually found at the end of pseudo-pregnancy.

(3) Nesting occurs most frequently in April and is not observed at all from the end of September to the beginning of March.

(4) Frequency of nesting depends upon the breed of the rabbit.

(5) It does not occur in the ovariectomised animal.

(6) Nest construction occurs more frequently among hysterectomised females than among intact animals.
