THE ACTION OF OEligSTRIN ON THE MAMMARY SECRETION

J. M. Robson 1

1 The Institute of Animal Genetics, University of Edinburgh

Administration of crystalline ketohydroxyoeligstrin in lactating mice (normal and ovariectomised) inhibits the mammary secretion. The degree of inhibition varies with the dose of hormone and with the method of administration, and, under certain conditions, may rapidly lead to a complete cessation of the mammary secretion. Cessation of oeligstrin injections is followed by a resumption of full mammary secretion and a rapid rise in the weight of the litter. Vaginal cornification is obtained in ovariectomised lactating animals with doses of oeligstrin that have little or no effect on the vaginal smear in lactating animals with intact ovaries.

The expenses of this investigation have been defrayed by grants from the Medical Research Council and the Royal Society.
