THE INFLUENCE OF DIETARY PROTEIN QUALITY ON THE RETENTION OF NITROGEN INDUCED BY EXTRACTS OF ANTERIOR HYPOPHYSEAL LOBE

H. N. Munro 1 and M. I. Chalmers 1

1 The Department of Biochemistry, The University, Glasgow

A crude alkaline extract of anterior hypophyseal lobe was injected over a short period into two groups of rats, one receiving a 15 per cent zein diet which did not support growth, and the other a similar diet fortified with sufficient tryptophan and lysine to make it capable of supporting growth. The depression of urinary N output caused by the injections was of similar magnitude for both groups. It had been concluded that the mechanism causing N retention is not necessarily associated with the process of growth.

Note:

The hypophyseal extract was very generously provided by Professor F. G. Young of Cambridge University. One of us (H. N. M.) is indebted to the Medical Research Council for a grant for expenses.
