THE EFFECT OF DEXTRAN ON SERUM PROTEINS AND SERUM CHOLESTEROL

A. B. Morrison 1

1 The Medical Research Council Department of Experimental Medicine, University of Cambridge

1. A solution of 10 per cent salt-free Dextran was administered intravenously to four dogs and ten rats and its effect on the blood followed for twenty-four hours.

2. There was a decrease in the concentration of serum globulin and serum cholesterol which persisted twenty-four hours after the infusion, when the other signs of dilution of the blood brought about by the Dextran had disappeared.

Note:

It is a pleasure to thank Dr. N. Lawrie for carrying out the electrophoretic studies, and Professor R. A. McCance, F.R.S., and Dr. E. M. Widdowson for help with the preparation of the paper.
