CHANGES IN THE ISLETS OF LANGERHANS ASSOCIATED WITH AGE AND HIBERNATION
1 The Department of Pathology, University of Cambridge, England, and from the Department of Pathological Anatomy, University of Pavia, Italy
The ratio of alpha to beta cells examined in rats and bats is at a high level in the young of each of these Apecies. It falls to lower values at about puberty because of an active mitotic multiplication of beta cells. After the adult level of the alpha/beta cell ratio has been reached in bats, carp and tench, it is not affected by changes in the body state arising from hibernation.
