AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE CYTOLOGY OF PANCREATIC ISLETS
1 The Department of Pathology, University of Cambridge, England, and the Department of Pathological Anatomy, University of Pavia, Italy
1. The islet apparatus of all vertebrates is mainly composed of alpha and beta cells. A third type of cell is sometimes visible among alpha elements, especially in fish. By means of different treatments (anoxia, cobalt chloride or insulin injections) it is possible to observe that both alpha and beta cells can be transformed into this "third type".
2. It is concluded that this type of cell is only a functional stage either of alpha or of beta cells.
Note:
I wish to thank Dr. C. Hebb for having revised my manuscript, and Messrs. O. Ciarrocca and S. W. Patman for the photomicrographs.
