The action of endogenous histamine, released from mast cells, on the uptake of colloid particles by the vascular elements of the rat mesentery was investigated. After the intraperitoneal administration of protamine sulphate, a marked accumulation of intravenously administered colloid Indian ink in the endothelium and perivascular histiocytes occurs. This process may be blocked by the antihistamine drug, Analergin. Particles of an intravenously injected fat emulsion, prepared from egg yolk, are also taken up by a similar mechanism.
