CHOLESTEROL ESTERASE ACTIVITY OF RABBIT MACROPHAGES

A. J. Day 1

1 Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, University of Oxford; Medical Research Council

Synthetic and hydrolytic cholesterol esterase activity of isolated rabbit macrophages was determined in vitro. Homogenates prepared from these cells esterified cholesterol at pH 6·0 and hydrolyzed cholesterol acetate at pH 7·3. It was not possible to demonstrate hydrolysis of cholesteryl oleate by homogenates or to increase the activity by the incorporation of coenzyme A and A.T.P. in the system.

Note:

I am indebted to Professor Sir Howard Florey for his continued interest in this work; to Dr. J. E. French for advice and encouragement and for his assistance in preparing this paper and to Mr. G. J. Wren for technical assistance.
