ELECTRON MICROSCOPIC OBSERVATIONS ON GOBLET CELLS OF THE RAT'S COLON
1 Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, Oxford
Goblet cells of the colon both unstimulated and stimulated by mustard oil have been examined with the electron microscope. The observations are consonant with the belief that mucin is elaborated in the region of the Golgi complex. The cellular structures of epithelial cells both in the normal and inflamed colon are described and the strong osmiophilia of the goblet cell is recorded.
Note:
I am much indebted to Dr. M. A. Jennings for preparing the rat tissues stimulated with mustard oil, and for help and valuable suggestions in preparing the paper. Mr. J. Kent has assisted with the animal experiments, Mr. D. W. Jerrome prepared the sections for electron microscopy, and Mr. F. Bradley prepared the photographic prints. I am also indebted to the Wellcome Trust for the loan of the electron microscope with which these observations were made.
