THE EFFECT OF HYPOPHYSECTOMY ON RESPIRATORY ENZYMES IN THE SUBMAXILLARY GLAND OF THE RAT

P. Ohlin 1

1 Institute of Physiology, University of Lund, Sweden

The activity of succinic dehydrogenase in the submaxillary gland of the rat was shown to vary with the age of the animal. The activity per g. of glandular tissue increased from the age of 3 weeks up to 3 months and thereafter remained constant to the age of 6 months. The weight of the submaxillary gland was significantly decreased after hypophysectomy and the activity of succinic dehydrogenase per g. of submaxillary glandular tissue was significantly lowered, but there was no change in the activity of cytochrome oxidase or of fumarase.

Note:

This work was supported by a grant from the Faculty of Medicine in Lund. Thanks are due to Dora Jacobsohn for great help with the histological preparations. Technical assistance was given by Miss Solveig Hofbauer.
