SYMPATHETIC SECRETORY INNERVATION OF THE RAT'S SUBMAXILLARY GLAND
1 Institute of Physiology, University of Lund, Sweden
A supersensitivity to noradrenaline and a decrease in the size of the submaxillary gland of rats develops after preganglionic sympathetic denervation. Milk or a solution of citric acid given to conscious rats evokes a lively secretion from the normally innervated submaxillary gland; even after parasympathetic denervation a secretory response is elicited which disappears after sympathetic denervation. The present findings indicate that the sympathetic innervation of the rat's submaxillary gland has a secretory function.
