THE EFFECT OF VAGAL STIMULATION AND ESERINE ON ISOLATED GUINEA-PIG
SOPHAGUS
1 Department of Veterinary Pharmacology, Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Edinburgh
The response of the isolated
sophagus to vagal stimulation was blocked by tubocurarine, decamethonium or nicotine, and was partially antagonized by hyoscine or hexamethonium. The response of the separated external muscle to vagal stimulation was antagonized by tubocurarine or decamethonium, but not by hyoscine or hexamethonium. The muscularis mucosæ and the
sophagus contracted to eserine, 5 µg./ml., after a delay of 2-3 min., but the external muscle did not. Hyoscine antagonized eserine acting on the
sophagus or muscularis mucosæ.
