STOICHIOMETRY OF NET SODIUM AND POTASSIUM FLUXES MEDIATED BY THE Na-K-Cl CO-TRANSPORT SYSTEM IN FERRET RED CELLS

Peter W. Flatman 1

1 Department of Physiology, University Medical School, Teviot Place, Edinburgh EH8 9AG

The bumetanide-sensitive Na-K-Cl co-transport system in ferret red cells produces net movement of lNa:1K. Tracer studies have misleadingly suggested a stoichiometry of 2Na:1K probably because the transporter mediates substantial Na-Na exchange in these cells.
