About the Cover

Cover Figure

The cover illustration depicts the hypothesized neural inputs to medullary brainstem circuits that mediate the cardiovascular response to exercise. Signals from arterial baroreceptors and skeletal muscle receptors and central command motor signals converge onto pools of medullary neurons (cVLM, caudal ventrolateral medulla; NTS, nucleus tractus solitarii; NA, nucleus ambiguus; rVLM, rostral ventrolateral medulla) that coordinate autonomic motor output to the heart and vascular smooth muscle. The exercising human is part of "Bodies: The Exhibition" (reproduced with permission of Premier Exhibitions). The background montage is a brainstem neuron colocalizing glutamic acid decarboxlyase (from the Potts lab, unpublished).
